Chiropractic Treatment

What to expect

The Chiropractor is a specialist clinician who deals with the diagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorders of the joints, muscles and soft tissues of the spine, and particularly their effect on the nervous system.

Based on a full history and thorough examination, we’ll diagnose your problem and devise a plan-of-action, to not only get you back on track quickly, but safely.

Each adjustment a Chiropractor makes is tailor-made to suite the individual needs of the person attending. Therefore, no adjustment or session is ever the same. This makes each adjustment we perform safe and effective.

We’ll give you the appropriate time you need and realistic advice and recommendations to make you feel better and achieve your goals.

The advice and treatment plan we give you is based on a 5 year Masters degree at University and years of experience that will determine a course of action. Remember, the advice and recommendations we give you, wont necessarily be what you want to hear, but will get you back to full health.

The highly developed diagnostic skills, and our professional hands-on approach will determine whether spinal-manipulation is appropriate for the condition, or whether we should refer you to a more appropriate medical profession, or for further investigation.

Additionally, Chiropractors are trained to read and interpret X-rays and MRI imaging, so we’ll know if these procedures are worthwhile pursuing and will recommend accordingly.

First Visit

On your initial consultation you will be greeted by our friendly receptionists and asked to complete a short questionnaire regarding your personal details, current condition, and any previous or relevant medical history. It’s important to have all this information so we can form a picture of your overall health and wellbeing.

It is also helpful to bring along any prescriptions, X-ray or MRI scan or reports. Additionally, if you are covered by any Health Insurance, please bring any information regarding this, and carefully check before your appointment that you are covered by the insurer.

The initial consultation can take anywhere between 45 minutes and an hour. You’ll be taken through;

–  A thorough history

–  A full health and spinal examination

–  A full discussion and report of findings concerning your presenting complaint and general health and wellbeing

–  An initial treatment and adjustments.

At each stage, we’ll want to know as much about your general health as well as your presenting compliant. its common practice for us to discover other ailments relating to your spine, muscles, ligaments and nerves that you may not know that a Chiropractor can help with.

We also like to know a little about your lifestyle and habits to see if they’re causing your symptoms or affecting your quality of life. Additionally, we like to know a little about your future aspirations and goals, to see how we can help you achieve them. If your lower back pain is stopping you running a marathon, going back to work, or even getting out of bed in the morning, then we want to help you achieve this.

At both our clinics you are given privacy to change in to appropriate attire for your health and spinal examination. You will be given a gown and shorts if you require them for the examination. Your privacy will be respected at all times by our professional staff.

After the case history and examination you will be given your own tailor-made Report-of-Findings. We will spend 10-15 minutes talking you through what we have discovered. It is really important that you as the patient understand what is going on and how we intend to fix it. This will include:

–  Your diagnosis  – What the problem is, and what caused it.

–  Your prognosis  – An estimated timescale to get you better, and achieve your goals.

–  The Plan – What we will do to get you better, and what improvements you are likely to experience both in and out of your sessions.

–  “Any questions?” – At any time during this process, you have the right, and we encourage you to ask questions so that you know what is going on.

At any point during the history or examination if we feel that Chiropractic is not
appropriate for your condition we will advise a course of action, which can be just as important as a Chiropractic session itself. It maybe that you require a scan, an investigation, or a referral back to your GP.

If  treatment is appropriate, we will commence with our adjustments to get you better in that session. It may be that we need more time to diagnose your problem, or come up with an appropriate Plan.

After this, you will be given time to change and taken back to reception to book your follow-up sessions and pay for your session. If you have health insurance we may be
invoicing your insurance company directly depending on your policy.

We hope this introduction has been useful and we will look forward to welcoming you in person to the clinic. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact our reception on 01752 241145.

Second Visit

This session is usually shorter than your first and will last up to 20 minutes, where we will ask a few  more questions regarding your previous visit, how you’ve responded and if you have any questions from your last consultation.

We appreciate that its a lot to take on board, so we do encourage you to ask questions. Those who ask more questions and actively get involved with their sessions generally get better quicker.

Once again, you’ll be asked to change in our private cubicle into appropriate clothes for the session. The exam will be more targeted to discover changes from your previous visit.

Your adjustments will start in this session to get you back on track. Remember there is a process to getting you better, it is not an event. Healing is a process where your body will respond to the therapies given over a duration of time. Contrary to belief, things aren’t necessarily always ‘popped back into place’. We need your body to do some of the work, and this takes time. Your initial Report-of-Findings will usually manage your expectations regrading this process.

After the adjustments, you will be asked to change and taken back to reception for payment and booking your next appointment.

Its always at this point that people want exercises to get better, but it is not always appropriate in the early stages of care. Once you’re pain free and moving correctly, this is when the emphasis of care is switched from the Chiropractor to the patient. The early stages of Chiropractic care is more what we can do for you, rather than what you can do for yourself.

Maintenance & Prevention

Preventative and Maintenance Chiropractic Care is an integral part of maintaining the progress made in the initial phases of care. We are concerned with improving people’s quality of life by helping strive towards optimum health and wellness.

This can come in the form of regular Chiropractic sessions at regular intervals, or attending the clinic when things start to revert to old habits. It can also be in the form of rehabilitative exercises to get you back in shape. Both aspects are designed to help prevent acute and chronic conditions from re-appearing.

Each patient is given a tailor-made specific program designed around their specific needs, resources, abilities, and limitations in order to meet their own individual targets.

Early detection and resultant correction of any spinal, muscle, ligament, joint or nerve dysfunction may reduce the onset of pain, disability and reduction in activities.
This is why we may recommend ongoing, recurring visits even after an acute problem has resolved and the patient properly rehabilitated. It’s through periodic visitations like these that can help one catch small concerns before they become big ones. Prevention is always better than cure!

Chiropractic preventative and maintenance care relies on an assortment of methods ranging from periodic reevaluation, to education on issues of diet and nutrition, fitness and exercise, the mechanics of spinal health, body postures, stress reduction, training in coordination, safety protocols, and modification of lifestyle patterns and personal habits.

Don’t until there’s already a problem, such as pain in the spine, before taking action. Instead act upon smaller symptoms that maybe building up to a more painful and disabling onset of pain.

We appreciate that individuals are dynamic and can be prone to injury, so if you do end up in pain before your preventative or maintenance session we’ll give you the time and appropriate care to get you back doing what you enjoy best. The important thing is not to panic, as help is at hand.
